San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 21, 2016 - Kenya and Algeria lost their first matches at the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Puerto Rico. A second loss would cost either team the chance to compete in Rio, so they will battle it on the second competition out to keep their Olympic hopes alive.
Head-to-head
• This is a repeat of last year's African Championship final when Kenya proved too strong (3-0).
• In 2015, they also met at the 2015 World Cup (3-0 Kenya win) and the 2015 World Grand Prix (3-2 Kenya win).
• In 2007 and 2011, these teams also battled in the final of the African Championship. Kenya won 3-0 in 2007 and 3-1 in 2011.
• The last time Algeria won against Kenya at a world-level tournament came at the 2011 World Cup when Algeria won 3-1.
Kenya
• Kenya suffered a 3-0 defeat against Colombia, without scoring more than 15 points in a set.
• In 10 of Kenya's last 11 competitive matches they either won or lost by a 3-0 scoreline. The exception was their 3-2 win against Peru at the 2015 World Cup.
• Brackcides Khadambi was Kenya's top scorer against Colombia with eight points, including seven spikes from 12 attempts.
Algeria
• Algeria lost 3-0 against Puerto Rico and they will now try to end their 14-match losing streak in competitive matches.
• Their last two wins came against Australia at the 2015 World Grand Prix in June 2015.
• Algeria won three matches against African opposition in 2015.
• However, their four defeats against African opposition all came against Kenya.
• Yasmine Abderrahim score was Algeria's highest scorer with seven points against Puerto Rico.
